April Showers bring Sinus and Allergy Season
I know that is not how the saying goes but, at this time of year, so many people are suffering from sinus and allergy symptoms that it’s hard to think about May flowers. I am sure you know someone who suffers with these complaints or perhaps you experience them yourself. Maybe you’ve had the symptoms all your life, maybe you have just developed them in the last couple of years or still yet, maybe you are among the many transplants to the Atlanta area that notice a problem just since moving to this area. No matter how long you have had these symptoms, they are bothersome and often lead to frequent sinus infections. So, what do you do? Suffer? Take a prescription or over the counter medication? What else is there?
With all of the concern now for side effects of medications, many people are reluctant to take a pill if they don’t have too especially if it is masking a symptom rather than solving a problem. That is when they start looking for alternatives. Perhaps you have had a friend rave about how their chiropractor helped them with their allergies. If you have never had chiropractic explained to you, that might sound a little crazy. But, this time of year I am asked at least once a day by a patient if the adjustments they have been receiving could be the reason they have seen a decrease in sinus or allergy symptoms.
It is certainly possible that their adjustments are helping if their symptoms were caused by a subluxation, which is a common problem that chiropractors correct. This is a disturbance in the nervous system caused by stress. Since your nervous system controls everything including your immune system, a disturbance here can cause all kinds of symptoms. Ever wonder why you have allergies and others who are breathing the same air don’t or you never had allergies before but do now? The difference isn’t the substance you are exposed to, it is your body’s inability to coexist with it. Could it be a problem in your nervous system?
While chiropractic isn’t a cure for any one symptom or condition, making the nervous system (which controls everything) work better can only improve overall health and function. What I can tell you for sure is that I am told frequently by my patients that they have had improvement in their sinus and allergy symptoms. They also tell me that they have told their friends and family, so if you have had someone who cares about you encourage you to try chiropractic, what are you waiting for? Stop suffering and start enjoying our beautiful Atlanta Spring.
